Emily St. John Appreciation Post 2: I loved this book. It was my favorite book I read in 2022. Last read of the year! The first book recommendation of the year (and yes I’m posting it much later) was from my dad: “The Dutch House.” My dad loves John Grisham and John Krakauer, so I was surprised when he loved a book by Ann Pachett so much. I had read “State of Wonder” previously and really liked it, so I chose to read “The Dutch House” as the first of my book recs. Thanksgiving season is a great time to read “The Book of Delights” to practice gratitude in things big or small. I had heard about the book through This American Life a couple of years ago and read it during the pandemic because short essays on everyday delights were much needed during the time. “Anatomy: a Love Story” is by Dana Schwartz, who is one of my favorite podcasters. I love her podcast “Noble Blood” and her storytelling of interesting historical events involving royals around the world. Witchy Halloween Recommendation: “The Book of Magic,” which is the last book of the “Practical Magic” series. If you only feel like reading some of the four, I highly recommend “Rules of Magic” and this one, “The Book of Magic.” (I’m not as big of a fan of “Practical Magic” or “Magic Lessons.”). For the final installment, Alice Hoffman brings back the three siblings featured in “Rules of Magic” as one of them nears the end of their life. Their two nieces and their daughters (from “Practical Magic”) are also featured, but I have to say the ones about the three siblings are the best chapters. I read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao because my brother strongly recommended it as one of his favorite books. I first read it in 2014 but thought it was a good book to revisit on Hispanic Heritage Month. I bought my own copy in the Semicolon Bookstore in Chicago, which I recommend for books of different cultures! A book to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the beginning of spooky season!
